HIGHGATE I

Refurbishment and double-high extension for a three-storey semi-detached Edwardian House located in a garden suburb of Highgate, just to the northeast of Hampstead Heath.

This Edwardian, four storey semi-detached house is sited on a sloping terrain with a long, narrow garden falling East. Central to our brief was to improve and upgrade the house, as well as provide a new, two-storey garden extension for a kids’ playroom. The work required the excavation and tanking of a full basement.
In order to provide direct access to the garden from both the lower ground and ground floors, our design included a light well with two sets of stairs. A wide one rising from the lower level and the other leading down from the large dining room. From this upper level, the expansive views are framed by steel Crittall windows spanning the full width of the extension.
A second area requiring more substantial alterations was in the roof. Here we introduced a pair of skylights with clerestory windows to bring light into the centre of the house. The clerestory windows also serve to make a connection between the master bedroom suite with office.
