TUFNELL PARK II
Anson Road | London
The refurbishment of this distinctive 1860’s detached Victorian house aimed to reveal its historic elements while adapting it for modern living. The design focused on preserving the house’s original character, ensuring its past is celebrated while meeting the needs of contemporary life.

The renovation of this unique detached Victorian house on Anson Road was a careful balance of restoring and enhancing its original character while introducing a contemporary layer of design. Originally divided into flats, the house was reconfigured back into what it was as a single-family home. There was a thoughtful emphasis on simple adjustments to preserve the architectural features, many of which were rediscovered. To this we added other materials and finishes, resulting in a rich, eclectic atmosphere that blends the old with the new, allowing the house to tell its story while meeting the needs of modern living.
Located within the Tufnell Park Conservation Area, the house is part of a historic neighbourhood characterised by its spacious detached villas and terraced houses, many dating back to the 1860s-70s. This area retains much of its residential charm, with only a few properties used for hotel or bed and breakfast accommodation. Once part of a rich dairy farming landscape, the area was fortunate to have avoided the disruptive roads and railways that cut through nearby Kentish Town and Camden in the 19th century, preserving its historical integrity.
ADAPTING LINES + SURFACES
Throughout the project we sought to respond to the existing forms, surfaces and lines with new one’s that both compliment what is already there while introducing something new.
